Design Literacy Retreat

On November 2, 2009, the Glass House offered an inspirational campus for Design Literacy Retreat. Leaders from education, culture, business, architecture, and design experienced design strategies first-hand as they worked together to develop new ideas and proposals to re-imagine and re-design learning and the education system.  The resulting publication, Design Design Thinking = Design Literacy,  offers a foundation for new partnerships, project implementation, advocacy and action proposed during Design Literacy Retreat.

After exploring the Philip Johnson Glass House 47-acre National Trust site, each participant was asked to make a wish for how design plus learning could equal a transformative experience for youth:

I wish that design might be used in all of our classrooms to teach problem solving and to inspire change...I wish that education actually gave children + young people opportunities to wonder...I wish that every classroom was a room with a view...I wish to inspire imagination and possibility...

The Glass House thanks program sponsors and all of the enthusiastic participants who contributed their ideas during the dynamic dialogues and experiences shared last November. Design Literacy Retreat was supported in part by AIANY President's Fund and the Catalan Center at NYU.  Design Literacy Retreat was curated with the National Endowment for the Arts.
