Paul Flaherty
Night Sounds is a performance series that parallels the seven part sculpture-in-residence exhibition Night (1947 – 2015). Guests join the performer and program curators for a live performance on the Glass House campus. Night Sounds is guest curated by Jordan Stein.
Night Sounds #7 featured a performance by Paul Flaherty alongside the seventh and final installment of Night (1947 – 2015), the sculpture World Receiver (2015) by artist Isa Genzken.
Paul Flaherty has been working in the field of free improvisation for the last 40 years both as a solo performer and in groups. His ecstatic tenor and alto saxophone music is characterized by rapid changes in time, key, and style and consistently confounds traditional harmonic, melodic, and compositional forms. Flaherty has appeared on stage and on record with Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore, Chris Corsano, Randall Colbourne, Bill Nace, Mette Rasmussen, and C. Spencer Yeh, to name a small few.
Night Sounds #7 was generously supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
