Join artist Jennie C. Jones for a conversation about her work and her upcoming interdisciplinary project at The Glass House. Jones creates visual and sonic abstractions that mine histories of American Modernism — focusing on Minimalism, avant-garde modes of music, and their corresponding cultural, social and political shifts — in order to highlight the unlikely alliances that emerge. Jones describes this approach as “listening as a conceptual practice.”

The conversation is preceded by a screening of Sound?? (dir. Dick Fontaine, 1966, 25 min.), a short film that juxtaposes John Cage and Rashaan Roland Kirk as they define what ‘sound’ means to them.

Jennie C. Jones attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1991), Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (1996) and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1996). She has had solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; The Kitchen, New York; and The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. She is the recipient of The William H. Johnson Prize (2008), the Studio Museum in Harlem’s Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize (2012), a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant (2013), and a Robert Rauschenberg Award from The Foundation for Contemporary Arts Foundation (2016). Jones is a visiting critic at Yale University and MFA Faculty at Bard College.
