Futures of the Architectural Exhibition
Join editors Reto Geiser and Michael Kubo for a free Zoom talk about their new publication Futures of the Architectural Exhibition (Park Books, 2023).
Over the last 50 years, exhibitions have proven to be a vital medium for architectural discourse, serving as platforms through which institutions and audiences have attended to architecture’s social, cultural, political, and environmental responsibilities. Futures of the Architectural Exhibition: Mario Ballesteros, Giovanna Borasi, Ann Lui, Ana Miljački, Zoë Ryan, Martino Stierli, Shirley Surya in Conversation with Students investigates the ways in which contemporary curators have approached questions of display in exhibitions and the stewardship of diverse institutional platforms for the representation of architecture and design.
Reto Geiser is a scholar of modern architecture focusing on the intersections between architecture, pedagogy, and media. He is currently Associate Professor of Architecture and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Rice University School of Architecture, where he teaches history, theory, and design. Geiser is the author of Giedion and America: Repositioning the History of Modern Architecture (2018) and the co-author of Projectiles (2021) and Reading Revolutionaries (2014). Geiser has curated the exhibition Explorations: Teaching, Design, Research, Switzerland’s official contribution to the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale, and the installation Rooms for Books at the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. A founding partner in the Houston-based design practice MG&Co., he is developing spatial strategies in a range of scales from the book to the house.
Michael Kubo’s practice spans the fields of architectural history and theory, advocacy and historic preservation, curatorial practice, and architectural design. He is currently Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for Architectural History and Theory at the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design, University of Houston. His recent co-authored publications include Imagining the Modern: Architecture and Urbanism of the Pittsburgh Renaissance (2019), Heroic: Concrete Architecture and the New Boston (2015), and OfficeUS Atlas (2015). He was Associate Curator for OfficeUS, the U.S. Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, co-curator of Imagining the Modern (2015–16) at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and co-curator of over fifteen exhibitions as a director of Pinkcomma gallery in Boston (2009–17).
