“Through Your Looking Glass”, the First of its Kind Art Showcase Highlighting the Intersection of Art, Design and Architecture on Social Justice

New Canaan, CT – August 30, 2022 Stand Together Against Racism (S.T.A.R.), in partnership with The Glass House, announces a special middle and high school student Art Showcase that seeks to recognize the role of art, design and/or architecture in advancing social justice related to inclusion, equity and diversity.

Fairfield County Middle and High school students (grades 6-12 as of 9/2022) are invited to create and submit art that reflects how social justice impacts their lives. S.T.A.R seeks art submissions to inspire the viewer to think about social justice explored using architecture, art and design as a medium for expression. Art can include paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, sculpture, videos/film (including TikTok style!) or architectural renderings. Christa Carr, Communications Director at The Glass House, and also a Board member of S.T.A.R said, “We are thrilled to partner with S.T.A.R on this exciting new program, empowering local middle and high school students to share their art and creativity through the lens of social justice.”

This is a true showcase, not a contest, and all student art will be exhibited at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. The showcase opens with a reception on October 15th from 12pm-2pm and will remain on view through October 29. Students, family, friends and community members are welcome to attend. The reception, and admission to the showcase throughout October, is free of charge. “The S.T.A.R. student social justice art showcase will be an important part of the 2022 October4Design, New Canaan’s annual celebration of architecture, art, and design,” said Nancy Geary, Executive Director of the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. “We look forward to seeing the creativity and vision of these young artists.”

All participants will have the opportunity to learn from prominent leading artists via a Zoom call on September 21 (artists to be announced) and will be invited to share and discuss their own work with other participants after the Showcase event. All participants will also get a chance to visit The Glass House.

– Students must register in advance to show their intent to submit their art and to participate in the September 21 Zoom call with the artists. Physical art, or videos, and the mandatory release form are due by October 4, The release form and additional information can be found on the S.T.A.R website (star-ct.org).

The showcase is made possible, in part, due to funding provided by the Exchange Club of New Canaan.
