Conserving Black Modernism

A lecture presented by The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (AACHAF) at the National Trust for Historic Preservation by Dr. Charles L. Davis II titled “Modernity and the Black Home as Public Art,” hosted by The Glass House.

Dr. Davis an associate professor of architecture at UT Austin and a fellow with the AACHAF’s Conserving Black Modernism program — a Getty Foundation supported initiative that seeks to diversify architectural history by raising awareness around and protecting the work of Black Modernist architects and designers. Dr. Davis’ presentation will expand on the process of defining Black Architectural Modernity, and how mid-century aesthetics, design experimentation, and social changes were reflected and reimagined by Black designers. After Dr. Davis’ presentation, AACHAF Executive Director Brent Leggs and AACHAF Senior Preservation Architect Brandon Bibby joined him for a conversation and a Q&A with the audience.
