Preserving Modernism: National Trust Sites at the Intersection of History and Modernity
Please note this program will be held during the PastForward Conference at the Hilton Milwaukee, 509 W Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53203
Join the site directors of four iconic homes under the stewardship of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, each a masterpiece of 20th-century modernist architecture. Discover the individual stories behind The Pope-Leighey House by Frank Lloyd Wright (1940), The Marcel Breuer House (1948) at the Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Glass House by Philip Johnson (1949), and the Edith Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe (1951), and what ties them all together as exemplars of Modernist design and thought. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear how these works of art were significant in their own time, how they overcame threats and obstacles in order to be preserved, and how their structures and stories continue to influence architectural design and creativity today.
