Mid-Century Modern Architecture Travel Guide

Join architecture critic Sam Lubell and architectural photographer Darren Bradley for a conversation about their recent book, Mid-Century Modern Architecture Travel Guide: East Coast USA (2018)Lubell and Bradley traveled up and down the east coast — from the Canadian border to the southern tip of Florida — to create a compendium to the best Modernist buildings and hidden gems built by some of the 20th century’s most notable architects. The guide includes examples by the leading architects of the time (including Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, Paul Rudolph, and Richard Meier) and features familiar and unfamiliar architectural destinations, from the beach houses of Fire Island in New York to private homes in Connecticut and Sarasota, Florida.

Sam Lubell is a writer and curator based in New York. He has written several books about architecture for Phaidon, Rizzoli, Metropolis Books, and Monacelli Press. He is a contributing editor at The Architect’s Newspaper and writes for The New York TimesWallpaperWiredThe Los Angeles TimesThe AtlanticArchitectural RecordArchitectural Review, and other publications.

Darren Bradley is an internationally recognized architectural photographer based in San Diego. His work has appeared in numerous books and magazines. His popular Instagram account @modarchitecture has over 86,000 followers.

Glass House Presents at New Canaan Library is an occasional series of talks and events about architecture, design, and Modernism in New Canaan and beyond. The series is collaboratively organized by the Glass House and the Library.
